Auguste Rodin was a French artist known for his expressive depictions of the human form. Regarded as the father of Modern sculpture, his iconic works comprise The Kiss (c. 1882) and The Thinker (1903). In his line of work, he used metals such as bronze, a copper alloy. This led to his concern about the effect of patina, a common occurrence caused by the oxidation of copper. In the late 1800s, Rodin experimented with different chemicals by layering green patina over a base coat of brown to achieve a marbleised effect (Rodin green). It was used to coat his sculptures and prevent the natural patination of copper from happening too soon. Today, his works are available in institutions throughout the world, encompassing various museums dedicated to his oeuvre, namely the Musée Rodin in Paris.

Known as one of the finest copper craftsmen of the arts and crafts period, John Pearson was one of the leading metalworkers at the Guild of Handicrafts. As one of the founding members, he created the work exhibited by the Guild at the 1888 Arts and Crafts exhibition. He was one of the pioneers of the Newlyn Copper style and developed the practice of beating copper on lead instead of pitch. This practice was deemed the trade secret of the Newlyn School. Having contributed many copper-based works, among the most notable examples of his work are the four large copper plaques, earth, air, fire and water, that decorate the facade of Newlyn Art Gallery.

John Drew MacKenzie was a famous master craftsman and instructor of the Newlyn Copper school in Cornwall, UK. He is credited with being the instigator of the Newlyn Copper Industry. In 1890, with the help of a handful of local artists and others, he founded the Newlyn Industrial Class (later called The Newlyn Art Metal Industry) with the aim of providing a useful occupation for young fishermen in their spare time and during times of unemployment. He was a brilliant designer whose ideas were executed by young craftsmen, mainly in repousse copper but also in brass and pewter, sometimes with enamel embellishments. Newlyn Copper is now highly valued by collectors.

Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi was a French sculptor who is best known for designing Liberty Enlightening the World (the Statue of Liberty). It is the largest known sculpture formed by copper repoussé in sections, with wooden structures used to shape each piece during the hammering process. It was rumoured that the body of Liberty was modelled on the artist’s mistress and the face is that of his mother.

Swiss sculptor and interior designer Jean Dunand was one of the great craftsmen of the Art Deco movement. In the early 1900s, he began experimenting with copper. With all the materials and processes available to him, he created natural and manmade forms to form variously hammered, encrusted, inlaid, and etched vessels. His copperwork led him to work with lacquer, which he famously applied to various surfaces such as vases, furniture, panels, screens, portraits, and jewelry. These compositions varied from his copper furnishings in scope and design as they were more geometric and angular, reflective of African Art and Cubism.

Paul Revere was a Patriot in the American Revolution. Throughout his life (1735-1818), he pursued numerous careers, from a master artisan in colonial Boston to a business entrepreneur and proto-industrialist in the early national period. He was, successively, a silversmith, engraver, revolutionary propagandist, soldier, cannon founder, dentist (a manufacturer of false teeth), hardware store proprietor, coppersmith, and bell maker. In 1801, he became a pioneer in the production of rolled copper, opening North America’s first copper mill south of Boston. His company’s sheet copper was used to cover the original wooden dome of the Massachusetts State House in 1802. Today, Revere Copper is one of the finest copper manufacturers in the world.
